The ink wash painting master, Prof. Hu Nien-tsu, whose literary name (hao) is Shi Niu Lao Mu, entered Nanjing College of Art to major in Chinese painting in 1946. He received official painting training from Chinese painting masters Huang Jun-bi and Pu Xin-yu. The renowned teachers and talented student complemented each other. Mr. Hu's painting style is derived from traditional Chinese painting. However, by borrowing the essence of western painting, he is not only able to integrate the creative concept of Chinese art and western art but has also been able to unlock the shackles of traditional sophisticates over the thousand-year history. He removes the limitations of the traditional rules by blending traditional and modern painting styles with his flexible use of ink, freely mastering both eastern and western art. Furthermore, his use of abstraction is exhibited in his unique art style that is unlike traditional ink wash painting.
